Outerwilds was originally a master thesis for Alex Beachum, which started in late 2012. It then grew into a full-production commercial release when Masi Oka came across the demo of the game and decided to hire the team into his studio Mobius Digital. The alpha version of the game was released in 2015 for free on the developer's website.
