Mallow was a Nomai who was part of the Ash Twin Project. They were the spouse of Avens.[1]

During discussions about the Eye of the Universe, Mallow pointed out that they learned that the Eye is in orbit around the Sun.[2] Since the Nomai also knew what the Eye looks like due to the Quantum Moon, Mallow proposed that they should try to find the Eye visually with a probe.[3] This eventually led to the building of the Orbital Probe Cannon.

Mallow later worked with their husband, Avens, and with Privet on the Orbital Probe Cannon. Mallow and Avens were responsible for testing and adjusting the Cannon's launch power.[4] They were both very passionate about finding the Eye of the Universe.[5] Avens' brother, Daz, decided to give them a slightly lower maximum power setting than the absolute maximum to account for their enthusiasm.[6] However, Mallow and Avens decided to ignore this setting to give the Orbital Probe Cannon the highest chance of finding the Eye of the Universe.[7] When discussing the Orbital Probe Cannon with Privet, Mallow told her that it did not matter if the Cannon's structural integrity was compromised, since they only needed to fire a probe once.[8]

Mallow and Privet were both on the Orbital Probe Cannon when the Ash Twin Project was put on hold due to the Sun Station not being able to trigger a Supernova.[9][10] Avens and Mallow decided to join Daz and Cassava at the Construction Yard.[11]

Mallow's remains are presumably with Avens' at the Construction Yard, where they died when the Ghost Matter from the Interloper spread throughout the solar system. The adjustments that Mallow and Avens made to the launch power proved to be fatal to the Orbital Probe Cannon, which breaks apart entirely upon launch, with the Probe Tracking Module disappearing into Giant's Deep's core.

Trivia

  • Mallow is the common English name for the Malva genus of herbaceous plants, many of which are perennial.

  1. DAZ: If I know my brother, Avens (and his spouse) will want to launch the probe with as much power as possible.
  2. MALLOW: Based on our knowledge of the Quantum Moon, we believe the Eye is in orbit around this star system’s sun.
  3. MALLOW: We know what the Eye looks like thanks to the Quantum Moon, so what if we try to find the Eye visually, instead? Let’s send out a probe!
  4. YARROW: Our friends on Giant’s Deep tested the Orbital Probe Cannon today. Mallow tells me the cannon is doing well, and that Avens advocates for more launch power.
  5. MALLOW: The thought of concluding our elders’ curious and challenging search increases my heart’s temperature, my love!
  6. DAZ: I propose we give Avens and Mallow a slightly lower maximum power setting for the Cannon than the absolute maximum possible to create room for their enthusiasm.
  7. AVENS: Giving the Orbital Probe Cannon all the power it can structurally withstand creates the greatest chance of finding the Eye of the universe. MALLOW: Yes, the probe must travel as fast as it can, as far as it can. I’ll make some adjustments!
  8. PRIVET: You won’t ask the Orbital Probe Cannon to use so much power that it breaks, will you? MALLOW: Fret not, my nervous friend! We only need to fire the probe once, anyway, so who minds if it compromises the Orbital Probe Cannon’s structural integrity slightly?
  9. CASSAVA: I have bad news, Avens. Yarrow says there was a problem with the proposed power source, so the Orbital Probe Cannon won’t be asked to fire.
  10. CASSAVA: Tell Privet and Mallow they should return from the cannon. My spouse and I will remain at the Construction Yard, for now.
  11. CASSAVA: Tell Privet and Mallow they should return from the cannon. My spouse and I will remain at the Construction Yard, for now. AVENS: An update: Mallow and I will join you and Daz.
